Arcane Dropout 2 : After forming a pact with the ghost of a former student, Lee Amaranth has gained a limited amount of spellcasting ability. It’s anyone’s guess how far three spells per day will take him, however. Now that he’s serving as an apprentice to Harper, his sister’s former lover and the school’s resident ice queen, the expectations on him are higher than ever.
The mystery of what happened to Zoe remains at the forefront of Lee’s mind. When new clues start turning up, he follows them, regardless of where they lead. A new threat, a new damsel-in-distress, and a new dilemma. Lee is forced to juggle his studies, romance, and detective work all while maintaining his guise as a mage.
“Initiates,” said Instructor Eileen, “please keep your focus on the task at hand. If any of you has yet to attempt the spell, do so now.”
Eileen’s telekinetically manipulated ribbon pulled outward toward Lee’s group like the needle of a compass. Eliza shrugged, and Toma moved to sit down at his desk.
“Ah, my turn, then,” said Lee. “Just have to, uh, stretch out my shoulder a bit first.”
He slowly stood up, scanning the room for a certain somewhat unreliable ghost, but didn’t spot her. Tess was prone to distraction, especially when it came to the time Lee spent in class.
“Here, I don’t mind being the target again,” said Eliza. “Whenever you’re ready, Lee.”
“Sure, sure.” Lee slowly began cracking each individual knuckle. Eliza rolled her eyes and folded her arms. He managed a solid thirty seconds of stalling before it became too much for his friends.
“Just try it already, Lee,” said Toma. “You’re good at conjuration. At least I had an excuse.”
Lee shrugged. It was easy to seem good at conjuration—or at least telekinesis—when your girlfriend was a moderately powerful ghost. He scowled as he looked around again. Where the hell was she?”
