Dead bodies are appearing all over town. The murderer likes playing games. In this game, the loser ends up dead.
Eliza Kingston moved back to her home town to feel safe again. When a woman bearing a striking resemblance to Eliza is murdered, it becomes clear that evil lurks around every corner. Evan Harding can’t deny that the recent murder is a threat to Eliza. He just got her back into his life and now he is determined to protect her, even if it means risking his own life.
While Evan works to solve the present-day murder, Eliza is pulled deeper into the past. She is more convinced than ever that her brother wrongfully confessed to the murder of five of their classmates. As she begins to put together the pieces to what happened that day 20 years ago, Eliza discovers that Michael isn’t the only one guarding secrets that have the potential to destroy the town.
The bar was crowded and Eliza avoided eye contact as she strolled to the bar to order a drink. As she was trying to get the bartender’s attention, someone sidled up next to her close enough that she could smell his cheap cologne.
“Buy you a drink?” he asked. “Let me guess… red wine?”
“No thanks. I buy my own drinks,” she replied without looking at him.
“A pretty little thing like you? I’m sure you’ve never had to buy a drink in your life.”
Eliza turned to him. “I’m not going home with you. I’m not going to have sex with you. Not tonight, not ever. Save your pick-up lines for someone who has no standards.”
“We don’t have to have sex,” the man said. “You can just jerk me off in the bathroom.”
“You’ve got to be kidding me.” Eliza rolled her eyes and stuck out her hand to get the bartender’s attention.
“I mean, I’ll return the favor.” The man clearly couldn’t take a hint. He put his hand on Eliza’s arm. “The same goes if you want to provide me with other sexual favors.”
Eliza glared and said, “Listen, ass–”
A man appeared on the other side of Eliza. “Get your damn hand off her. Can’t you tell this lady is way out of your league, asshole?” Eliza’s heart beat faster as she turned to smile at him. He handed her a glass. “I ordered you a bourbon.”
“That’s my drink.” Eliza’s smile widened. The first guy tugged on her arm.
“What the hell? I just offered to buy you a drink,” he said angrily.
Eliza sighed as she turned back to him. “Yes, but your drink had a disgusting bathroom handjob attached to it. I can guarantee you his drink is a much better deal.” She turned away from the jerk. “Am I right?”
“Hell yes.” Evan grinned. “Are you going to kiss me or what, King?”
“Hell yes.” Eliza grabbed his shirt and pulled him close, planting her lips firmly on his. He tasted like bourbon and desire.
Evan had been out of town for the last week, working on an investigation for a case. Eliza had missed him even more than she had expected. She’d definitely missed his lips. And his hands. Those hands were currently sliding under her shirt.
“God, I missed you,” Evan said as he moved his lips along her jaw before pressing them to her ear. “I missed being able to do this.” His hand traveled up her side and his thumb skimmed over her breast.
“You’re very good at that,” Eliza said, biting down on her lip to keep from moaning. “Should we go back to your place right now?’
“Not yet.” Evan pulled back. “I promised you a date tonight.”
“You bought me a drink. That counts as a date, right?” Eliza ran her hands down his chest while looking at him purposefully.
Evan laughed and pulled his hand out from under her shirt. “You haven’t even taken a sip of the drink. Let’s give it at least a few minutes, Elle.”
“Fine.” Eliza groaned and picked up the drink. She took a long sip. “I guess we can talk or something.”
