Monday May 20, Morning. On a bright and beautiful morning in May, Shelby leaned against a little round table in the breakfast room of The Island Slumber Bed and Breakfast. Sunlight sparkled in through the row of tall multi-paned windows that curved around one end of the room. Shelby thought this was the perfect situation — her goal was to have a happy, healthy summer. She wanted to help her friends and to keep busy while her husband, Jesse, did research for his PhD. And she wanted to stay out of trouble! She’d already been involved in two murder cases this year. Those had been dangerous times. Now she wanted to avoid stressful situations. And all for a good reason — she and Jesse were hoping for a baby this year. She didn’t want anything to upset her health because of that plan. She listened as her friend, Jasmine, the owner of the B&B, animatedly waved her arms, a paintbrush in one hand and a photo in the other, talking about the mural that was going up by the pool. Jasmine had already been painting that morning, her clothes spattered with multiple shades of green, gray, and orange. The purple streak in her black hair added one more tone to her look.
“I’ve got the colors marked out and blocked. It will be kind of a paint-by-numbers, fill-in-the-blanks project for you.”
Shelby nodded.
“You’ll see what I mean when you get down there. There are numbers on the paint cans that match numbers on the sections.”
