Fatal Finale : Who is abducting talented young musicians – and why?
When a gifted violinist disappears from a prestigious music academy, the police ask psychologist Dr. Pippa Durrant to help with the case.
Working alongside new flame, DS Joe Swain, Pippa quickly realises that the world of first class musicianship is not all peace and harmony. Rather it seethes with envy, competition, sexual intrigue and murderous rage. Which means suspects are everywhere.
Faced with a stunningly complex case, Pippa will need all her lie detection skills if she is to uncover the horrifying truth. And, when she does, she finds she is in a terrifying race against time…
“What do you play?’ I ask.
She looks at me strangely. ‘Viola. Classical, mainly, some crossover.’
‘Are you performing tonight?’
‘Yup. At The Cadogan Hall.’
‘I’ll be there,’ I say, grinning. ‘My partner is treating me.’ DS Joe Swain, who has been my lover for the past three months, and my occasional business partner, won two tickets to the recital at a charity dinner. He wasn’t that keen, but I persuaded him that we should go. It’s a Saturday and I normally have clients, but I’ve freed up the afternoon to spend a few hours shopping and wandering around London before meeting up with Joe later. That’s one of the advantages of being a psychologist with my own practice. So long as I give my clients sufficient advance notice, I can organise my diary to suit myself.
‘Do you like classical music?’ she asks.
My hesitation says it all. She sighs. ‘Most people only know us as The Shostablades.’
I frown. Just because I can read other people’s faces doesn’t mean I can control my own.
‘We were runners-up in last year’s Britain’s Got Talent.’
I didn’t watch the programme, but I must have read about them somewhere, so I nod and smile.”
