Spilling the Spice : When shady entrepreneurs slink into Spicetown to splurge on the 4th of July holiday, their enemies are bound to follow.
Mayor Cora Mae Bingham wants her statue dedication to take center stage at the celebration, but a murder in Spicetown steals the front page news.
Can she help the Police Chief Conrad Harris solve the crime and still be Grand Marshall of the parade?
“Well, I’m not,” Cora huffed. “This is Spicetown’s parade and our police chief should be first. The sheriff will be fine following.”
“He may not show up if you’ve bruised his ego. He may send a deputy instead.”
“All the better,” Cora smiled. “I won’t have time for his ego. Will Wink be able to stay awake? Doesn’t he always work nights? I thought you’d use Sammy.”
“I’m giving Georgia the day off because she’s doing something with the craft fair and Sammy is going to be on dispatch. Wink actually asked to come. He wants to bring his dog, Hank, with him.”
“Tell him that’s fine. I don’t mind but Hank has to be on a leash. How is the new guy?” Cora smiled when Conrad looked away in search of a response.
“He’s trying.” Conrad shrugged and looked down at Cora. “He’s young yet. If Roy doesn’t corrupt him totally, he might do okay.”
“Mrs. Bing. Mrs. Bing!” Cora snapped to attention and searched the street for the voice. Seeing Nellie Turner across the street waving one hand over her head and clutching her camera with the other, Cora waved back.
“Oh, no,” Conrad muttered softly. “I’ll take these to the sub shop and see you later.” Conrad tried to snatch the fliers from Cora, but she kept her hand firmly planted over them as Nellie ran across the street with the small camera around her neck bouncing against her chest.”
