The Accident: If only she’d said no…
Katherine knew she’d had too many drinks, but they were only going a short distance. And as Eve pointed out, it was late, there was no traffic anyway…
Now, Katherine would do anything to turn back the clock. If anyone ever found out about the accident, it would ruin Katherine’s life. But no one needs to know because Eve was there too, and she’s going to help make it all go away.
Except something’s not quite right with Eve, and by the time Katherine realizes that…
“I’m laughing because this entire evening has been so strange. I’m laughing because I don’t know why I’m laughing. Probably because I’m stoned. I’m high. I’m drunk. And I’m laughing especially because guess what, Mr. Cunningham, it’s not my turn.
“Jesus. What the—”
Then I hear Eve next to me. At first I don’t realize it’s Eve because she’s making such a weird sound that I think it’s something wrong with the car. I turn to her, and my stomach flips.
“Oh, God. Oh, my God. Eve.” She’s hunched over, wailing softly, her chest straining against the seatbelt, her forehead pressed against the dashboard. Her breath is loud, raspy.
I’m not laughing now.
“Eve, what’s wrong? Are you okay? No, of course you’re not okay.”
I’m shaking so much, I struggle to find the clip to my seatbelt, and even when my fingers grasp at the latch it takes a few goes before it releases.
“Oh, Christ. Eve, talk to me.”
I lean over to her, put a hand on her shoulder, bend down low so I can see her face.”
