The Grave Digger’s : ONE DARK SECRET. ONE ADOLESCENT OBSESSION.
As a boy, Ben was a witness in the disappearance and suspected murder of a beautiful young woman, Esther Garrett, which led to an intense adolescent obsession.
Twenty years later, the conviction of her murderer is overturned due to a police corruption scandal. Ben’s obsession is reawakened when Esther’s sister asks for his help in investigating the crime.
As Ben is drawn deeper into the case, he will be forced to face the truth about his own life and soon finds himself questioning everything he ever believed.
Was Esther really murdered?
And if so, could the killer be closer to home than anyone ever imagined?
“Ben’s father changed gear and the bus began to slow in the approach to the Berebroke junction. Ben heard his voice through the Perspex window, low and calm, ‘You all right, love?’
She nodded and gave a short smile that dimpled her cheeks and made her eyes shine momentarily.
Ben held his breath as the bus swung around and then downhill into Berebroke itself. After a few hundred metres the engine gave a climactic rumble and the heavy vehicle lurched to a halt. The doors hissed and clattered open. The girl stepped out into the white light of the single street lamp which illuminated the country bus stop. Without stopping she pulled the hood of her duffel coat over her head. She did not go along the pavement into the centre of the village but instead took the path behind the bus stop. It led away into a small wood – the last remaining part of what was once a great forest – and the way was unlit, and overgrown with oaks, brambles and hawthorn. She seemed to know the way and within seconds had been folded up in the dark.
The bus jolted and the doors crashed shut but before it could pull away the young man came striding forward, brushing past Ben with the swinging carrier bag.”
