The Matchless: There are certain special individuals who can harness their genius and madness to gain powers beyond the imagination of normal people. These are the Matchless. Nadia Eskandarian learns she can harvest physical manifestations of power that the Matchless leave in their wake, and use them to perform miracles. But there are others out there with the same abilities, and they’re all fighting for the same finite and dangerous resources. And the Matchless don’t want to be harvested.
“She stood in the burned-out mansion. The sounds of the hills—the slight breeze, the birds imitating car alarms, the distant grind of traffic—were muted. Maybe she was imagining the hallowed sensation drawing icy fingers up her spine. Maybe so many deaths could linger. That amount of pain and fear could leave a scar upon the world.
Nadia had not seen much more than the few pictures in the papers. They were on the LA Times website and could be found anywhere there was a fascination with true crime. The Simcoe Killer had quite the body count, and the most odd fact was that they all seemed to die that night. All of them, with lungs full of smoke and skin burnt crispy, had been slain in the same blaze. Begged the question: what had he been doing with them until then?
The picture she had in mind was of the burned-out manor, from the other angle. A single shot over the scorched house, sheets covering indistinct lumps. They were all in one place, as though they had been sleeping in a giant lump when it had happened, and only had seconds to try to crawl to something approaching safety. It was a small mercy that Odette was not among them. Nadia wondered if it was because she had been taken relatively recently. She hoped it could be nothing else. That her sister had been spared the worst of the killer’s evil.
There was another shot, and this was the one that continued to haunt her.”
